The plumage of this American Goldfinch states emphatically that we are still in winter.

Someday I hope to see the fabled Swan Quarter swans! But there are plenty at Lake Mattamuskeet.


Tundra Swans, Lake Mattamuskett, Hyde County, NC, 2/17/06. All were flying south to the southernmost part of the lake.


North River Park, Greenville, Pitt County, 2/15/06. Since these geese don't show up in the books, they're probably members of a domesticated goose species (or two!)	Yellow-rumped Warbler, trail at the Swan Quarter ferry station, 2/17/06. In this area of high grass, this was the dominant species, although there were a few Red-winged Blackbirds and a few mystery birds. Possibly a first-year Red-winged Blackbird, 2/13/06	Same bird, pausing from poking around under pine needles.	Tufted Titmouse adapting to yet another new food venue, 2/13/06	Male Northern Cardinal, 2/13/06, with seed in cheek.	White-throated Sparrow, 2/14/06, convinced it was hidden by branches from me.
