The birds of Penny's Bend on 12/28/05 were either friendly or just curious:
|Male Eastern Towhee, Penny's Bend Nature Preserve, Durham County, NC, 12/28/05||White-throated Sparrow, Penny's Bend Nature Preserve, Durham County, NC, 12/28/05||Different bird, same time and place.|
Great Blue Herons abound these days:
|Great Blue Heron, Durham, 12/23/05||Great Blue Heron, Eno River State Park, Fews Ford access, 12/27/05||Great Blue Heron, Duke Gardens, Durham, NC, 12/30/05|
Lots of action at the local Wild Birds Unlimited® and in our back yard:
|House Sparrows, 12/22/05||Song Sparrow, 12/22/05||This Song Sparrow (12/22/05) has managed to get very fat!|
|Tufted Titmouse, Durham, 12/22/05||Carolina Chickadee, Durham, 12/22/05, apparently balancing a seed on its foot.||Carolina Wren, Durham, 12/22/05|
These birds showed up in the neighborhood along a walkway on 12/21/05.
|Carolina Wren||Female Dark-eyed Junco||White-throated Sparrows. Thanks to Mary McDavit for the ID. I guess the yellow "eyebrows" were the key.|
Thanks to Wild Birds Unlimited®, I had some great photo opportunites on 12/20/05!

High bird season has come back to my front and back yards!
|Carolina Wren, Durham, 12/17/05. At first, this bird seemed wary when it saw me coming.||Then it tried to face me down (doesn't it look fierce?), but eventually took off.||Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Durham, 12/17/05||Male House Finch, Durham, 12/19/05. This bird appeared at the front yard feeder, and the harsh morning light called for some image processing.|
|Downy Woodpecker, Durham, NC, 12/16/05. Again attacking my house! Putting out suet has failed to deter this determined little beast.||Northern Flicker, Durham, NC, 12/16/05||Northern Cardinal, Durham, NC, 12/16/05.||Cedar Waxwing, Durham, NC, 12/16/05. Both of these waxwings were alone when photographed, at least half a mile apart.||Cedar Waxwing, Durham, NC, 12/16/05|
|Downy Woodpecker, Durham, 12/10/05. This little rascal had the nerve to fly up to our house and start hammering while I stood there!||Female Northern Cardinal, Durham, 12/14/05||Red-tailed Hawk, Durham, NC, 12/16/05||Dark-eyed Junco, Durham, NC, 12/16/05||Dark-eyed Junco, Durham, NC, 12/16/05. This bird was bathing very vigorously in a local stream.|
Action on the far southern Atlantic NC coast:
|Adult male Boat-tailed Grackle, Kure Beach, New Hanover County, NC, 12/12/05||Probably immature Boat-tailed Grackle, Kure Beach, 12/12/05||Juvenile Brown Pelican, Kure Beach, 12/12/05|
