Woolly Alder Aphids (Prociphilus tessellatus) gathered in huge numbers on a tree branch at Johnston Mill Nature Preserve, Orange County, NC on 8/31/07.  When disturbed, they waved their abdomens, with this white material stuck to them, up and down. Dog-day Cicada nymph.  You can tell from all the clay stuck to this nymph that it recently came up out of the ground. Leafhopper (Macrosteles quadrilineatus) nymph and adult, Durham, NC, 8/15/07.  These were two of hundreds of such leafhopper in what used to be a swamp before a currently long drought.  The leaf they were on belonged to one of many succulent plants with yellow flowers. Mystery beetles, Durham, 8/15/07.  These showed up in the same place as the leafhoppers on the left.  They were each about 1 mm long.

Golden Tortoise Beetle (Charidotella bicolor), Durham, NC, 7/1/07.  These are photos of the same beetle, taken in different lights.  Notice the transparent but reflective "tortoise" shell covering the beetle.  Part of the right front section of the shell seems to be broken off.
