Female Red Maple flowers.  This tree seemed to have nothing but, while another Red Maple next to it had nothing but male flowers. Winged Elm female flowers, producing fruit Part of a Hophornbeam (Ostrya virginiana) male catkin, Durham, NC.  This structure gradually unfolds (lengthens, really), exposing the anthers.
