Ocola Skippers (Panoquina ocola)

Ocola Skipper (Panoquina ocola), Durham, NC, 7/04/04, ventral view of right hind wing and part of forewing. Ocola Skippers seem to be relatively common in eastern North Carolina, although the butterfly books suggest otherwise.  Perhaps it's because that long forewing makes them hard to miss.  Ocola Skipper, Bay St. Louis, MS, 10/7/04. Ocola Skipper, dorsal view of left forewing and right hindwing.   You can see why they used to call Ocolas "longwing skippers!"  This skipper hangs around later in the year than other butterflies and skippers, and this particular one appeared in Carolina Beach, New Hanover County, NC on 11/19/04. Ocola Skipper, Durham, 7/24/05.  This one appeared in my front yard. Ocola Skipper, Durham, 8/20/05. Ocola Skipper, the local swamp in Durham, 9/3/05.
